The Lamest Product Ever Invented April 23, 2010

Kleenex ® has a new invention out: the hand towel, in which involved disposable paper towels designed for hand drying. The commercial involves a family who uses the same hand towel over and over again, in comparison to a family who uses the product.

Is it just me, or am I the only one seeing something wrong with this picture?

No, it’s not just me- it’s Earth that sees the big picture.

Kleenex ® uses the comparable misconception that we need to use a something that we don’t really need, identical to the bottled water conspiracy. The company takes the “scare tactic” route by having household members believe that reusing regular hand towels is unsanitary.  The truth is, that towel of yours is not going to cause you any harm.

Doesn’t Kleenex ® realize what kind of economy crisis we live in? Not only that these disposable towels are not drying their hands any cleaner than a regular hand towel, but more tress will be cut down & more waste will be put in the landfill.

Worse yet, the company has come up with a jingle (yes, that’s right. A JINGLE) geared towards children to consume their merchandise. You can even download the MP3! (Please note the fake enthusiasm). A child will not be interested in these kind of manufactured goods. A song about it is not going to sway them, either. Nice try, though.

Save your time, save your money. This product is not worth validation.

Bad Beef! April 15, 2010

I admit it. I eat meat. No secret there. But I’ve been wanting to reduce my meat intake for a while. Last night I was researching different approaches. Some including tips on making your barbeque meals green. This supplied a variety of veggie burger patties by Amy’s Kitchen brand, and recipes for black and white bean burger patties (which looks rockin’ rather than revolting).

It was probably a good thing that I started researching alternatives, because then I watched this ABC News video.

HIGH levels of dangerous chemicals and metals, such as copper which contributes to Jaundice and kidney failure when consumed! Even Mexico aren’t allowing this meat into their country. So why is the USA?

That is why I would like to encourage you with me to start on this road to a greener living. Throwing or attending a summer party? PLEASE skip the meat, whether making or consuming. If you are served food, politely refuse and tell them WHY. Try the barbeque tips I found!

I plan on trying both bean recipes, and I will review them when I do. If you would like to try these recipes as well, please let me know what you think!

I really hope you will consider this project with me, or at least take the time to read this and/or spread the awareness. I really do appreciate the relationship we have together, and if there’s any way you could contribute, I would greatly grateful.

Cheers!

iGo Green? April 10, 2010

With Earth Day approaching (April 22nd), I took this as an opportunity to point out a few things from my favorite TV show, Nickelodeon’s “iCarly” (Got a problem with it? Too bad. Read on).

While having my own marathon last fall, I started noticing some behavioral traits of the characters that made me ask, “Why isn’t iCarly more green?” There was even an episode, entitled “iGo Nuclear”, that even touched on the subject of being eco-friendly! Here are a few points that I wanted to note:

#1 In a numerous amount of episodes, Carly and her friends drink from bottled water. It has been proven that bottled water is unsafe and unnecessary. Tap water has been tested to be just as safe (not to mention that most bottled water ARE from tap!), not to mention you can get tap for FREE! To learn more about bottled water, please visit The Story of Bottled Water.

#2 Another matter about the bottled water situation is of the plastic. It takes a lot of energy to regenerate plastic, and many bottles end up in the landfill instead of the recycling! Using reusable bottles (like the stainless steel brand, SIGG) has become more than just a fad- it’s become more of a lifestyle, which I believe that everyone should participate in. Carly seems to be the kind of trendy girl to me that would carry around a cute & colorful SIGG with her… Let’s hope iCarly recycles those plastic bottles, at least.

#3 Speaking of plastic, in the episode “iMake Sam Girlier”, Spencer and Carly reveal that they choose “plastic” over “paper” in the grocery bag debate. Why, oh, why would you choose plastic? Better yet, how come they don’t use reusable bags, which almost all stores offer now at the checkout line? Now, there are a few things you can do about those plastic bags: reuse & recycle. Stash plastic bags away to reuse them, or iron them down to convert them into vinyl sheets (for your DIY reusable bags or a raincoat- get creative!). Plastic bags are also accepted in recycling.

#4 Okay, this point is definitely out of the ordinary. In “iEngrage Gibby”, Spencer takes home an indoor incinerator to burn all of the apartment residents’ newspapers because of a bad review on his artwork. I just have one thing to say to Spencer: “Can you say ‘carbon monoxide’?” That’s all I have to say here.

At least there are a couple of positive things that iCarly practices:

#1 In “iGo Nuclear”, Carly reveals that she takes the bus. Way to use public transportation! Using local services will reduce smog emissions. Spencer also does the smart thing and uses a motorcycle (which was a gift from Carly, as seen in “iPromote Techfoots”), which is typically more fuel efficient than most cars.

#2 Spencer, being an artist for a living, reuses items to compile in his sculptures (as seen in episodes such as “iChristmas”, where he announces he picks up found objects from the junkyard). The practice of reusing will keep trash out of landfills.

Despite looking at these negative aspects of these little details that appear on the show, it’s still very charming to watch. Just with a few minor changes to these details, I believe that iCarly will have a bigger impact on viewers by having the characters practice sustainability… Then maybe next time Carly and Freddie won’t have to go on the Roots & Berries retreat!

Gettin’ Crafty with T-Shirts March 29, 2010

It’s Spring Break… And I’m bored! So to occupy my time, I’m trying to work up a brainstorm to figure out how to revamp some T-shirts I have hanging in my closet.

The inspiration source:

Generation T

Shirt #1: Front.  This shirt I received from participating in the Heritage Festival, March 2003. It is really huge, but I’ve been hanging onto it not only because it shows off a milestone in my life, but I think that the graphics are cool and I’ve been wanting to transform it into something really cool.

Shirt #1: Model “Back”.  I’m playing with the idea of making the back the frontside.

Shirt #2: Front.  Drake Bell shirt I bought on the official merchandise website, as part of a special deal during his release of his sophomore album, “It’s Only Time”. It was of his tour in 2006, but I saw him during his tour of the following year in July 2007. I like the fit, so I might just keep it the way it is.

Shirt #6: Front.  I bought this back in the summer/fall of 2008. It was exactly what I was looking for, except that it’s supposeto be a nightshirt, and thus has a really long hem.

This was meant to be part of a Back to the Future’s Marty McFly meets Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends’ Goo Goo Gaga look, for a mid-winter outfit. Now I need a yellow puffer vest to complete the look (http://www.landsend.com/pp/DownVest-77279_146484_59.html?CM_MERCH=PGGT_1_from_0000047371_to_0000027993).

Shirt #7: Front.  My Paul Frank’s Julius as Speed Racer t-shirt. I haven’t worn it in a while. It’s got a nice comfy fit. I don’t think I want to do any major changes to it, but possibly make it a slightly more fitted look.

Shirt #8: Front.  A shirt of “The Fairly Odd Parents” that I got from Paramount’s Great America back in 2004. I love the graphic. Not sure if I dig that the hem is so short, it’s more of a mid drift kind of fit.

Shirt #8 Front

Shirt #8: Detail.  Text reads: “NOD if you’re Fairly Odd” … “Paramount Parks”

Shirt #9: Front.  This was my work shirt. While I love the color, fit, and feel, I feel it’s time to remove the label from sight. What kind of embellishment shall I try? A slashed-shaped look, or patchwork?

Generation-T Project #94 (my 1st DIY!), the braided cord

Braided Cord Book

Three t-shirt hems (in pink, black, & navy) cut, stretched, & braided. The pink is from an older t-shirt, which was more stretched out. I decided to leave the longer bit instead of snipping it off. Hems included were actually from Shirt #1 & 5.

Braided Cord

Finished product on model, wearing it the traditional hippie/sweatband way, but carries other functions for hair, neck, or waist wear.

Generation-T Project #94 Step 1: Cut hem off

Cutting Cords

Wanted to take a step up and add color to the band. I had these Tulip-brand spray-on color paints from a project beforehand.

Fabric Spray

Start sprayin’… Tye dye!

Tie Dye!

Final product. Came out a little less tye dye-like, but I’m satisfied with the color. Now just need to iron it & let it fully dry. Then save it to complete another project.

Quarter-Life Crisis? March 9, 2010

March. It’s the month of Spring (21st)- yay for Spring!, Women’s Day (8th)- shout out to all my ladies!, and St. Patrick’s Day (17th). It’s also a quarter into the year. So let’s have a check up: Have you kept up with your New Year’s Resolution? … That’s okay. I haven’t reached my goals yet, either.

I am really happy in my life. I’ve got great friends and family. But I can’t help and get flashes of what I have been doing with my life- good and bad- in past years, sometimes wishing I could relive the moment and/or what my life would have been if I played it out differently. I wonder if this is what they call a quarter-life crisis or identity crisis. Here’s a secret about me: one of my biggest fears is growing up. It’s not really the act of growing up. It’s just the responsibilities that I know that I should be doing, and I’m just not at that stage in my life.

I’ve known for a fact that ever since I was born, I always take my time with things (Hence, why I’m still working on school, with several more years to go). But sometimes I get a little frustrated, thinking, “Why couldn’t I just have gotten my act together and gotten this done sooner? I really need to stop goofing and slacking off and get moving with my life!” (I say that, then I look back on that moment, I recall that I sat around my bedroom doing nothing after making that realization. How’s that for contradiction?)

Anyway, instead of constantly bouncing from past to present to future in a negative way (which I’m sure this affecting my self-esteem), I suppose this would be the time to look at the way Ferris Bueller put it: “Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop to look around once in a while, you could miss it.” And that’s sound advice. So is Rob Thomas’ “Little Wonders”: “Our lives our made in these small hours”.

Just live in the moment!

Songs Boys Need to Write for Me February 8, 2010

“I would give body parts to have a guy write something like that for me. My kidney? Oh, both of them? Here, Nick, they’re yours-just write more for me. I’ll give you a start: boy in punk club asks strange girl to be his girlfriend for five minutes, girl kisses boy, boy kisses back, boy then meets girl-what did you notice about /this/ girl? Nick, let’s hear some lyrics. Please? Ready. Set. Go.”

– Norah, “Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist” by Rachel Cohn & David Levithan

A Proposal!

So Valentine’s Day is just around the corner… Which usually mean that I’m hiding underneath my bed covers wishing it would just go away. Luckily this year, I’m throwing a party that celebrates love with friends and family- particularly for those who are currently single (link below).

While I may be single now, I know that special someone will come along. I’ll patiently wait. But as a heads-up to all the guys out there- the best way you could win me over is to write me a song. Here’s my top 20 songs (in no particular order) in my iTunes of the kind of songs boys could write for me:

1. “Grow Old With You” by Adam Sandler (The Wedding Singer Volume 2: More Music From The Motion Picture)
2. “No Myth” by Michael Penn (March)
3. “Just Wanna Be With You“, by Lucas Grabeel & Olesya Rulin (High School Musical 3: Senior Year)*
4. “It Had To Be You” by Motion City Soundtrack (Even if It Kills Me)
5. “Whatever My Love” by Mickey Drummond (iCarly)
6. “Crash Into Me” by Dave Matthews Band (Crash)
7. “Best Days” by Matt White (Best Days)
8. “Hey You” by Jimmy Robbins (Too Sorry for Apologies)**
9. “O.K. It’s Alright With Me” by Eric Hutcherson (Sounds Like This)
10. “Boy Meets Girl” by Evan Taubenfeld (Welcome To The Blacklist Club)
11. “Mario Kart Love Song” by Sam Hart (Mario Kart Love Song)
12. “Georgia On My Mind” by Vince Giordano’s Nighthawks (Ghost World)
13. “Ancient History” by Hawk Nelson (…Is My Friend!)
14. “Other Ways” by Trevor Hall (Shrek The Third)
15. “Always” by Switchfoot (Hello Hurricane)**
16. “Never Better Off Alone” by John Spengler (It Is Well)
17. “Somebody To Talk To” by This Providence (Who Are You Now?)
18. “Hey Ya” by Obadiah Parker (Obadiah Parker Live)
19. “Telegraph” by Drake Bell (Telegraph)
20. “Anyone Else But You” by Michael Cera & Ellen Page (Juno)

*Yes, only the Ryan & Kelsi part! And don’t be making fun of High School Musical! If you had written me a song, we would have ended up together like the two characters did.

**Or any song by that artist or Goo Goo Dolls

Birthday Bash

Celebrating my birthday, Dec. 10th

So there’s something that I’ve been wanting to do all year. Make a demo of an a cappella cover of “Let That Be Enough” by Switchfoot, off of their album, “New Way to Be Human” (1999).

I waited nearly entirely all year to to this project, on December 9th 2009, because the lyrics would pertain to me EXACTLY (take a look at the end of the notes).

I was born on a Thursday, my birthday is on a Thursday this year, and I’m turning 22. Not only that, but I share the same view, the same kind of thoughts, throughout the year.

As an experiment can go, I think it turned out pretty nicely. Let me know what you think. Comment below.

“Let That Be Enough” by Switchfoot © Jon Foreman

I wish I had what I needed
To be on my own
‘Cause I feel so defeated
And I’m feeling alone

And it all seems so helpless
And I have no plans
I’m a plane in the sunset
With nowhere to land

And all I see
It could never make me happy And all my sand castles
Spend their time collapsing

Let me know that You hear me
Let me know Your touch
Let me know that You love me
Let that be enough

It’s my birthday tomorrow
No one here could now
I was born this Thursday

And I feel stuck
Watching history repeating
Yeah, who am I?
Just a kid who knows he’s needy

Let me know that You hear me
Let me know Your touch
Let me know that You love me
And let that be enough

Daisy Rock’s Evan Taubenfeld Demo Sweepstakes: Day 2! December 11, 2008

DAY #2!!!

I was given an address the previous day to where we would be going to record the demo at 11 o’clock. So our scheme was, after waking up and getting ready, to check out of our hotel room and get breakfast at the hotel. It was awfully expensive, so we decided to catch a cab and find the place we were going to go first, then find somewhere to eat. We imagined that it would be on a busy street with at least a Starbucks around.

However, the cab driver was unsure where this place was when we gave him the address. We start driving through a residential area.

“Where is this place?” our cab driver asked. “A friend’s house?”

“No,” we both answer. “It’s a studio…” We start driving up the hills, and we reach three houses connected to each other, with an electrical gate in front- we think it might be the place. The cab driver had us get out and check we were where we needed to be before he left. I saw the name “Taubenfeld” on the call box, so I dialed.

Oh my gosh, I realized. This was his home! It turned out to be his home studio!

A guy in his pajamas answered the door. “Hi, I’m Drew. I just woke up.” Once I went up to him, I TOTALLY recognized him! He’s Evan’s younger brother, Drew Taubenfeld, who just recently toured this past summer as Disney Channel Star Demi Lovato’s guitarist. Though I guess he wasn’t used to people recognizing him!

Let me just say that their pad is SOOO sweet! Not ginormous, but spacious and modern- the kind of place where a musician has really made it. Lots of artwork, and well-kept for two guys in their 20s (must have housekeeper…)

Evan was downstairs making some phone calls (and I’ll let you know why he was on the phone later…), and since being an hour and a half early, we hadn’t eaten yet, so Drew invited to eat breakfast with him. Evan came up shortly after, and we started chatting about ourselves.

Only in my dreams something like this could happen, and there I was, eating organic cereal with soy milk, and talking shit about the Jonas Brothers with the guy who wrote, “Don’t try to tell me what to do/Don’t try to tell me what to say/I’m better off that way”. But nothing in my entire life felt so real than this. What was surreal was having to go home to live my normal life of taking the bus, finishing finals, and working retail (as much as I possibly could during the holidays).

Anyway… once we finished our cereal, we went downstairs to record the demo. But just before we did that, I want to quickly mention something my sister asked Evan.

K: “So, how did you get involved with this contest?”

Evan: “Honestly, I only just recently found out about it. That’s why I was on the phone earlier, because I found out this morning that I had to take someone out on a date.”

K: “But they put your name on it, how could they do that?”

E: “Managers say yes to things.”

Poor Evan.

Recording a Demo

His home studio! Check out his YouTube channel!

Where the Magic Happens

This is where the magic happens. Recording, mixing, and what-not on his computer.

Evan's Guitars

His guitars. The space second from the left is where his Taylor 810 guitar, which I used, sits.

Platinum Edition

Every multi-platinum album Avril Lavigne has, Evan has framed on the side wall of his studio. Although, he has it hidden behind the door, because he doesn’t want to show off his “trophies”.

First, I recorded a rough track for the guitars. We recorded it by chunks. Verse, Chorus, Bridge, ending.

Playing Guitar

Here, we’re getting the mic set up.

Checking the Mic

Then after the guitars were done, we recorded the vocals. I had accidently pocketed his pick as well. Shh!

Recording Vocals

Evan said that I got things down quickly. Originally, we had a 3 o’clock flight back home, but the Daisy Rock company wanted to make sure that I had enough time to record, so our flight was going to be instead at 6 o’clock. The thing is… I had finished in an hour and a half.

He then said that he would take a day with his editing guys to mix and produce, etc., then he would send the demo through e-mail.

Future Superstar

Evan was going to get us a tour of Warner Records, but they were closed for Thanksgiving. Though before we left, Evan played us a couple of his singles that will be released in January. Let me just say that I’ve been craving “Pumpkin Pie” ever since, and you can bet that I’ll be first in line to buy his album!

Evan & Me

Also, he gave us bracelets with his music company logo on it (see Photo 4 for the logo). They’re prototypes, so the public doesn’t have them yet! And he showed us logos and MySpace banners, and asked for our opinion. A few days ago, I noticed that the one I liked overall was put up! Check out his MySpace page.

I told Evan, “Let us know when you’re playing in the Bay Area; we’ll come see you.”

He said, “Yeah! Give me your e-mail, and we can hang out backstage!” Whoa. Not expecting that.

Sigh

Drew drove us back to City Walk, so we wouldn’t have to take a cab. This picture was taken the moment we got out. We’re in total bliss here. Sigh. But we had nothing to do. We ate lunch, got bored and tired, so we were able to get an earlier flight.

– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

A couple of days after, the demo was complete! I heard that my e-mail was lost (which I still need to re-give them), so it was forwarded from my sister. I know I’ve been neglecting on a lot of things because of the crazy holiday, and everyone’s (even friends of friends I hadn’t even met before!) been asking me about the trip and a copy of the demo. I’m hoping that this coming year, I’ll set up a website, music MySpace, etc.!
